Aviation

A Historical Background of International Air Law--The Madrid Convention of 1926.

The Paris Convention of 1919 produced the International Commission of Air Navigation (ICAN), but it was not signed by the United States, Russia or many other countries after World War I. Spain declined to sign because of Article 34, which related to the uneven treatment of the signatory parties (and for political reasons--Iberia would soon withdrew from the League of Nations after its permanent seat was rejected).

Bike Law

Riding two-abreast and on the right side of the road. Is it required?

In Georgia, a bicycle is legally a "vehicle". A vehicle is defined by the code as a device "in, upon, or by which any person or property is or may be transported or drawn upon a highway, excepting devices used exclusively upon stationary rails or tracks." Therefore, vehicular traffic laws apply to the operation of a bicycle. As with any law, there are exceptions. Wherever the code uses the phrase "motor vehicle," that part of the law does not apply to bicycles. Over the next few articles, I will explore different sections of the code as it relates to bicycles and their use on public highways.

Where and how on a highway can a bicyclist ride? Is a bicycle rider restricted to the side walk or the extreme right side of the road? Must bicyclist maintain a single file when they are riding in a group? The answer to both questions is "NO."

Mediation

Having a Hard Time Financially?

Mediation offers creatives ways to solve your financial problems. In today's tough economic times when legal remedies are often lacking, supervised mediation may be the best solution.

When money is tight, the resulting stress creates personal and business conflicts. When these conflicts arise, people turn to legal solutions and lawsuits. Litigation is expensive and adds even more to the financial stress.

Mediation is often overlooked as an option to litigation. For whatever reason (lack of understanding, anger, not knowing how to proceed), mediation is not considered first. I am asking you that you consider this option and contact me about it.

Estate Planning

Estate Planning is about the business of life and death.

Estate planning is about the business of life and death. It is a serious subject that is, for most people, hard to discuss. As a result of this difficulty, we often ignore the matters involved until it is too late.

My task as an attorney is to advise you on the proper way to discuss life and death matters; this discussion should be calm and methodical and plan for future contingencies to the best of our abilities.

The starting point for you should be determination of what assets you own or control. The next step involves to whom and how you wish to give those assets at your death. Third, the most economical transfer method for those assets should be explored. Lastly, control of the assets in cause you are incapacitated should be examined and planned.

My Travels

Improving Your Sleep Environment--The Bedroom

In my continued effort to find the best night’s sleep for myself, I have made some insightful discoveries; one of them has to do with my sleep environment. Whether on the road or at my own house, I have found that a quiet, dark, cool temperature room leads to better sleep. Your bedroom environment profoundly affects the quality of sleep you get.

Things that I have found to be modifiable are stress, noise, light, temperature, and the bed. I have talked about stress levels in past articles and I continue to work on reducing it; going to bed without worry and finding relaxation is a quest for me. I continue to use relaxation techniques to help improve in this area and have seen big improvements in the quality of my sleep.
